I read several obituaries for historian David Halberstam and not one of them mentioned his fine book October 1964 (Villard, 1994). This book is required reading for all Cardinal fans and Yankee-haters. It chronicles the beginning-of-the-end of the great mid-century Yankee dynasty (pre-Steinbrenner), and the emergence of the powerhouse Cardinal teams of the 1960s.
