Weekend Notes

  • Our beloved kitty Samantha has gone missing. She went out for an evening stroll Thursday and has not returned. She is 14 years old, and she has been very ill recently, so we suspect that she went looking for a quiet place to take her “final” cat nap. Our neighbor found her collar today near some tufts of her fur, but no sign of her. We’re hoping that she turns up, but given her current condition it is unlikely she could survive unless someone has taken her in.
  • This spring Paul Simon was awarded the first-ever Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. This past week PBS aired the tribute concert that commerated the award. It was a terrific show — Lyle Lovett & Buckwheat Zydeco did a particularly good cover of ‘That Was Your Mother’. Somehow my vinyl copy of Simon’s 1986 masterpiece Graceland never made the conversion to the digital era — a quick impulse buy on iTunes corrected that oversight. I had forgotten how absolutely brilliant that album is — it is one of those records that reminds you how good pop music can be. I could go on for pages about Simon’s brilliance, but do yourself a favor and get a copy for yourself.
  • Jack is sleeping in a big boy bed now. His little sister will inherit his crib this fall.
  • Despite the fact that I don’t really like talking on the telephone, I must confess that I have been caught up in all this iPhone frenzy — it is just so darn cool. I don’t expect to get one soon, but I am thinking about one for the wife — she needs a new phone and her 3rd generation iPod is looking a little long in the tooth.
  • I drove down to Memphis to attend my aunt Mary’s funeral last weekend. She was one of the kindest people I ever met. She will be missed.
  • I recently added a Creative Commons license button intended to cover all original work posted on my site. Believe it or not, once in blue moon somebody does stumble across one of my ramblings that interests them enough that they republish it. That’s cool with me — the CC license simply says that you (a) can’t use my work for commercial purposes and (b) you have to give me proper attribution and (c) you must grant others the same rights that are attached to the original work if they wish to republish it or any works derived from the original work. No biggie. I am no copyright lawyer, so I’m sure that I missed something — the full text of the license can be found here.
