Some Good End of Summer Stuff

  • Movies: The wife and I don’t have time to see many movies.  We did see The Dark Knight.  It actually lived up to the hype — it was just a terrific movie.  I have never seen anything in a super hero movie that compares to Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker.
  • Music: Since emerging from the exile of his bedroom Brian Wilson has made some great music.  He may be 65 years old, but he is still exploring the same musical and emotional themes that he did with the Beach Boys nearly 50 years ago.  His latest is That Lucky Old Sun. I just love it — I hope he never gets too old to sing about sun, surfing and pretty girls.
  • Reading:  I just read Barbara Tuchman’s The Guns of August (1962).  It is a classic, but this the first time that I have read it — it won’t be the last.  This is a fantastic piece of history.  Tuchman provides rich details on the people and events of that fateful month. Though almost 50 years have passed since its publication, the book is still relevant today — we are still living with the fallout of many of the decisions made in August 1914.
