First Snow

I would estimate that we had 4-5 inches of snow yesterday.  It tailed off mid-evening, but the wind built drifts up overnight.

Part Two

So maybe I will post twice today.

Wiped

One of those days — I will be sound asleep 4 seconds after my head hits my pillow.

The Juliet Letters

I must have been at the height of my Elvis Costello hyper-fandom when I picked up The Juliet Letters in 1993.  Normally I avoid such genre-spanning indulgences, even by my favorite artists.  To my surprise I instantly loved the album, and I still listen to it regularly almost 2 decades later — in fact I have probably listened to it straight through 3 times already in the New Year.  Elvis’ lyrics are at their sharpest — and his voice perfectly complements the beautiful music of the Brodsky Quartet.

The Boy’s New Year’s Resolution Is Wearing Me Out

The boy resolved to get up early every morning this year — more time to game, he figures.  Anyway, he has stuck to it so far and it is wearing me out.  I am dog tired tonight, so this is all I’ve got for today.

Looking for New Web Host Options

My current hosting plan has me a little frustrated, and it is really my own fault. It has some nice pre-packaged applications, which would probably work fine had I not chose to customize them.  Once I walked a few steps down the customization trail I should have realized that I was committed to a fully customized environment.  The problem is my plan doesn’t support a fully customized environment — I can’t upgrade MySQL whenever I want, for example.

I realized this problem some months ago, but I didn’t do anything about it before my plan came up for renewal.  So I ended up pressed for time and renewed with the same host and the same plan.  I need get out of the middle of the road and decide if I can live with a fully prepackaged plan with little or no customization, or if I need to move to a host that can provide me with more control over the server.  Whether I maintain my current enthusiasm for doing more with my site will probably factor into my decision.

I would love to hear some suggestions.  I have more than I year before my plan is up for renewal, so I have plenty of time to prepare for a transition.

P.S.  I should emphasize that GoDaddy, my current host, has been great — the plan is everything they promised it would be, the price is a bargain and they have provided me with terrific support.  However, I am beginning to think that they just might not be the right host for me.  It’s not you, it’s me.

High Noon

I watched High Noon (1953) for the the first time last night on Netflix streaming.  What a terrific movie!

SOPA

If the SOPA legislation passes I might have to consider shutting down this blog.  I do not link to pirate sites, but I would guess that about 90% of the spam comments I receive do link to those sites.  My comment spam filter catches most of them, but would I be legally liable if one slipped through?  On the other hand, since I only get one or two legitimate comments a year I guess I could just disable comments and the world would continue to spin on its axis.

Beginnings

I wrote the shell of a pretty good political post this evening, but it is going to need to cook for a while before I click the “Publish” button.  In fact I’ve written more drafts already this year than I did all of last year.  That might be my new model for getting back into regular blogging.  Draft, polish, draft, polish, polish, polish and publish when ready.  I also hope that I find myself scrapping more material — I don’t mind writing myself down a few blind alleys as long as I keep writing.

In the meantime I will try to publish at least a couple of lines of clean prose each day.
